影片改编自美国女作家 Kody Keplinger 出版于2010年的同名小说，英文片名The DUFF，是“指定的又丑又胖的朋友”（Designated Ugly Fat Friend）的首字母缩写。惠特曼饰演的高中女生比安卡，在学校里就是人尽皆知的“DUFF”，在她那些又高又瘦又美的闺蜜们身边，不知不觉地默默当着绿叶，衬托她们，让她们显得更有魅力。
