NOTES
This is a crime / mystery thriller with surreal and psychedelic science fiction overtones based on a book Inspector Glebsky's Puzzle by the Strugatsky brothers. The screenplay was also written by the brothers and it differs from the book. The less you know about the movie the better starting point you have. The film is based largely on the mystery of what's happening to the people of Dead Mountaineer's Hotel. Is everything what it seems? Who's dead or who's not?。牧场主金夫人携子德恩下乡视察，牧人陆起夫妇殷勤招待，其女琳姑与德恩两小无猜，相嬉相爱。金夫人重门阀，不许其子与牧女交游。数年以后，琳姑盈盈长成，又遇金夫人偕子下乡。琳姑以门第悬殊回避德恩，德恩力主爱情不分贫富，并邀其入城游览，形影不离，情同夫妻。金夫人欲为德恩论婚某世家之女，遂逐琳姑还乡。德恩不舍，别营他屋安顿。不久，琳姑怀孕，促德恩实告其母，以举行婚礼，德恩惧母，诓而慰之。时琳姑母患病，陆起至金家寻女，金夫人察知真相后大怒，软禁德恩，逐走琳姑，并将陆起解雇。陆起携琳姑回家，妻已死去。牧场因陆起解职，劫牛贼聚众劫牛，陆起挺身而出，被贼众 以石灰烧瞎双目。时琳姑已育一子，体弱多病，无钱医治。乡中一老者欲乘人之危，谋娶琳姑，遭琳姑拒绝。一天，德恩获知琳姑病危，不顾母亲阻拦，下乡看望，时琳姑已经弥留。琳姑死后，金夫人痛自悔悟，下乡赔礼，并亲自搀扶陆起，德恩抱着婴儿，一同哭祭于琳姑墓前。。
