本片根据真实故事改编。2001年秋，一对户外旅行人员在人迹罕至的深山老林中发现了两位老人，他们竟是四十多年前从村中失踪的石山（王诗槐饰）和红姑（谢兰饰）。如今的他们仿佛生活在刀耕火种的原始社会，住在自造的土屋内，点着自造的油灯，吃着自种的粮食，喝着山涧的泉水，所有的一切都自给自足。几十年来，他们生育了儿女，也收获了坚贞。近半个世纪过去了，石山靠一双手在山上俢凿了6000多级石阶，为的是不让自己的那个她出门摔跤，而他自己也从一个黒发后生变成了白发老翁，那6000级石阶被人称为“爱情天梯”，亘古的爱情令人深思......。When he learns his days are numbered old count Hervé de Kéraudren decides to hide in a secret alcove and to die there, just to annoy his heirs. As a result of his body not being found the latter will have to wait for five years until they can inherit the count's money. Very upsetting indeed, all the more as they are required to keep up the Kéraudren estate in the meantime. To collect money, nephews and nieces organize a Son et Lumière show at the manor while busily looking for the missing corpse. But, unexpectedly, they get killed in turns. Murders or accidents? Jean-Marie, his fiancée Micheline and his cousin Edwige investigate and finally succeed in exposing the culprit.
